Super Mario RPG Armageddon freezes

I‘ve played Mario RPG Armageddon on my SNES Mini. Whenever I get a level up and pick the hammer , it freezes . I play Version 8 Easy mode

You can't choose the hammer on SNES Classic in v8.  As you said, it crashes the game.

If you switch to v9 or to Snes9X, choosing the hammer will work fine.  Otherwise, you'll have to skip the attack bonuses (there's no physical defense bonus in v8).
